What is “shik” today?
Designer garments which were exposed in dazzling shop windows yesterday, today are soaking in the rain piled as garbage in the rich areas. Created to satisfy whims and caprices, they are mercilessly discarded by their “emotionally tired” owners in favor of equally unimportant “pieces”.
I “resurrect” garments from oblivion and piece them together into wearable collages. My process of work is the exact opposite of industrial production; it “soaks" clothing with a particular warm human energy.
I tend to mix precious silks with materials which have been exposed to the elements, signs of decay created by the process of existence become part of the design.
My garments are timeless in a sense that they could be modified through creative alterations endlessly according to the changing needs and poetic vision of the owner or another artist into whose hands they will fall.
Seen this way, I would define today’s “shik“as uniqueness arrived at through regeneration and remodeling. |
